Limbo’s not a verb – between paradise

and burning – the only sound that’s heard there

is an infant’s cry.

Who waits for news waits on the edge

of time, hands weaving and unweaving

the fish rise, the sky clears

lovers love to wait, be it so, until

anticipation dies. Dead letter

holding pen – the mean time.

Never having been

as far as the town of Belfast,

you land in Dunedin like cargo

filling a shortfall in the ship’s quota

– a workhouse surplus

there were so many

of your people

in the workhouse

the guardians

gave up on plates

& introduced feeding troughs.
